I feel that many students require some help related to understanding and constructing sentences which adhere to the proper rules of grammar. As a student I initially struggled to capture the basics of English and grammatical rules, but after using a simple set of structured lessons I was able to enrich my knowledge and use the language more fluently. The set of posts I’m doing will be targeted to the novices of English language who are struggling to understand the grammatical rules.
In this blog post I’m going to blog about simple presentence which will be valuable for performing daily conversations based on present tense. Tense means the time. Ideally English language consists of PAST, PRESENT and FUTURE tenses.
Simple Presentence
Actions that are happening at present (taking place now).
FORMS:
1. [VERB]
2. [VERB] + s/es
Form 1 is used when referring to first (I), second (you) or third person plural form (they). Form 2 is used for third person (he/she/it).
We will consider the [VERB] eat
Positive: When we agree with the present action
First Person: I eat
Second Person: You/ We eat
Third Person Singular: He/ She/ It eats
Third Person Plural: They eat
Look how [VERB]+S has been used for the third person singular. Now how do you think the below verbs can be used in first person singular?
Go, Walk, Run, Play, Sleep
First Person Second Person Third Person - Singular Third Person - Plural
I walk You/We walk He/ She/ It walks They walk
I run You/We run He/ She/ It runs They run
I play You/We play He/ She/ It plays They play
I sleep You/We sleep He/ She/ It sleeps They sleep
Noticed any difference?
Yes, the usage of verb “Go” in third person singular form has applied the form [VERB] + ES.
What have we learnt up to now?
• Simple presentence means describing an action that is taking place at present.
• It has two forms: [Verb], [Verb] + s/es
• We have learnt how to use verbs in the positive format of simple present.
Let us try out constructing a simple sentence (consisting of, [subject] + [verb] + [object]) in simple presentence.
First Person: I play cricket.
Second Person: You/ We play cricket.
Third Person Singular: He/ She/ It plays cricket.
Third Person Plural: They play cricket.
